Faculty brings a wealth of national and international experience
to the week in Jackson. They'll use photos, video and personal
stories from the field to discuss how they broke into the
highly coveted and competitive action/adventure industry,
and how they remain at the top of prestigious client lists.
In this practical, informative, and inspirational workshop,
participants will learn techniques and keys to success as
we discuss everything from journalistic philosophy to the
hands-on business of "the business": travel tips,
equipment pointers and suggestions, technical aspects of
their work, and finally the level of passion, commitment,
and perseverance required to enter and remain in this exciting
branch of photography.
Workshop History
As America turned outdoors
in recent years, the adventuresome found the off-roads, the
beauty of the backcountry and the challenge of their wild
surroundings. Adventure became a way of life for some,
an avocation for others and a way to spend the weekend for
many, and the cameras came out. As the climbers, hikers,
cyclists conquered their new quests, photography became
not just a record of memories and achievements, but an art
into itself. Great Pictures became a part of Great Adventures.
Thus, when the respected National Geographic Society launched
a new magazine seven years ago, it was only natural they
bring the Geographic's great photography to the world of
adventure. And National Geographic Adventure magazine was
not only born, it immediately became the preeminent showcase
of great adventure photography and in its short life, has
won an amazing four National Magazine Awards -- the Oscars
of magazine publishing. And one of those put it at the top
of all magazines in their circulation category -- winner
of the prize for general excellence.
The founding and still current editor, John Rasmus, has
brought together and showcased the work of the world's leading
photographers in an era of adventure. So it came as logical
that the magazine has partnered with the Summit Series of
workshops begin annual workshops in adventure photography.
Six days of classroom, career counseling and field photography
in The Grand Tetons
provides not only an insider's view on technical and creative
advances, but
also advise with practical career-development in this fast
growing field.

Details
With 10 instructors and staff onsite,
each student can be assured a low student-to-instructor ratio
and ample personalized attention. The combined knowledge
of the faculty is outstanding and attendees have a chance
to get not one or two opinions on their work, but many
points of view from a cross-section of the industry that
you won't find anywhere else, including staff and athletes
from The North Face.
Expect ample time for shooting in the field,
one-on-one and group technical instruction, peer review
of
images you shoot during the week, portfolio reviews and career
counseling.
Be sure to also check the Daily
Sessions page for a description of a typical day at the
workshop, though this week will veer a little more on the
active side than a week at one of our other workshops.
Daily shooting and critiques should produe a nice package
of photos for your portfolio by weeks end. Nikon will have
digital cameras to loan on a 24-hour basis as well as a variety
of lenses, with Lexar providing memory cards for the group.
Apple will provide workstations for attendee use and indepth
instruction on their leading photographic workflow tool,
Aperture 2. We will provide printers for use during the
week and we'll cover best practices for getting the most
out of your digital printer. Individual appointments with
instructors for portfolio reviews and career counseling are
encouraged. The week begins with a welcoming reception and
ends with a farewell dinner, courtesy of our sponsors. This
workshop is best suited for professional and advanced-amateur
photographers who are looking to take their photography and
careers to the next level.
We ask that you bring all of the equipment with which you
normally shoot, especially Nikon users, as you will
be able to use the large consignment of Nikon cameras and
lenses in conjunction with your own. Photographers that currently
use other brands of cameras are free to use your own equipment.
We ask that you bring your own laptop if you have one available
to you and please let us know at the time of registration
if you will be bringing a laptop.
Attendees are expected to bring all gear relevant to the
outdoor experience. At a minimum, you'll need cold weather
clothing, sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes, a sleeping
bag rated to 0 degrees, tent or bivy sack, headlamp, large
backpack, campstove and cookware, in addition to food for
the overnight trip. You may also wish to bring technical
climbing gear if you wish to get on the ropes, but will only
need a harness, belay device and shoes. We'll have the ropes
and protection on the routes, as well as a few loaner harnesses
for those without gear.
Nikon will have digital cameras to loan on a 24-hour basis
as well as a variety of lenses, with Lexar providing memory
cards for the group. Apple will provide workstations for
attendee use and indepth instruction on their leading photographic
workflow tool, Aperture. We'll have desktop digital printers
for use during the week and we'll cover best practices for
getting the most out of your digital printer. We recommend
bringing all of the camera equipment you normally bring for
adventure photography as well as a laptop or portable image
bank for your days in the field as the Apple provided laptops
cannot leave the workshop classroom.
